  • What is Plagiocephaly?
Plagiocephaly,, also known as flat head syndrome, is a condition characterized by an abnormal flattening or asymmetry of the head shape in infants.
  • What causes flat head syndrome?
Flat head syndrome is often caused by external pressure on the baby's skull, such as spending excessive time in one position (such as lying on the back) or prolonged pressure on one area of the head.
  • Can flat head syndrome be prevented?
Yes, flat head syndrome can often be prevented. Regularly changing the baby's head position, providing supervised tummy time, and using proper bedding and supportive devices can help minimize the risk of developing a flat spot.
  • When should I start tummy time?
Tummy time can begin as early as the baby's first week of life. Start with short periods of a few minutes a few times a day and gradually increase the duration as the baby gets stronger.
  • Will flat head syndrome correct itself over time?
In many cases, mild cases of flat head syndrome can correct themselves as the baby grows and becomes more mobile. However, for more severe cases or if no improvement is noticed, medical intervention or treatment may be required.
  • Can plagiocephaly be treated without helmet?
In 77% of cases, milder plagiocephaly can be corrected sufficiently without the need for a helmet.
  • Is flat head syndrome a serious condition?
Flat head syndrome itself is usually a cosmetic concern and does not typically cause long-term health issues. However, it's important to address it early to prevent potential developmental delays or complications. Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider can help monitor the baby's progress.
